Chemistry is Beautiful

I was initially fascinated by chemistry because of the beauty of chemical structures. Chemical structures have certain rules and patterns, but the combinations of elements are virtually infinite. I wanted to be able to design and synthesize molecules that I think are beautiful to feed my appetite for cool looking molecules. This desire pulled me to the world of synthetic organic chemistry. I majored in organic chemistry, which equipped me with the skill and knowledge I needed to make what want.

However, organic molecules, to the naked eye, look like white powder or colorless liquid. The actual beauty of the molecule is challenging to see even through a microscope. I thought the beauty would be best captured by objects at a scale visible to human eyes.

Jewelry was the perfect medium to fulfill this objective. As I could not find anybody selling jewelry featuring organic molecules, I decided to start crafting pieces myself.

I received much positive feedback from non-chemists for the chemistry jewelry which made me realize that chemistry knowledge is not necessary at all to appreciate the beauty of chemistry. It is unfortunate that for most people their first encounters with chemistry happens in a classroom which shows only one side of chemistry. Often we do not spend enough time appreciating chemical structure at school. It seems to me that many people dislike chemistry because school is not the best way to interact with chemistry for them. It is too soon to dismiss chemistry as a whole simply because it is not a fun subject. Like the way people appreciate flowers without knowledge of botany, I think it is possible to enjoy chemistry without comprehending all of its academic facets. Regardless of the level of understanding of chemistry, we all share a natural desire to decorate ourselves with beautiful objects.

I hope our jewelry will change the way people view chemistry.
